Sofia Asvesta has once again claimed a medal, this time representing Cyprus at the Junior European Judo Cup in Sarajevo.
First up for Sofia was Gordana Ilic from Bosnia Herzegovina. After receiving a penalty, Sofia went on to beat the athlete with Ippon towards the end of the second minute.
In the second round she met the athlete from Israel, Paz Kafri, a Bronze medal winner from the Athens Junior European Cup 2019 and who went on to the final after Sofia lost to her by Ippon in the second minute – a close contest, but the experience of the Israeli athlete was the main factor here.
Sofia entered the Repechage and her next opponent was Mila Kraljevic from Serbia. In a close contest, Sofia beat the athlete from Serbia in second minute again and proceeded to the next round.
Here she met Rachel Van de Meeberg from The Netherlands – Gold medallist in the 2016 Cadet European Cup. Rachel was awarded a penalty in the first minute and then Sofia went on to win with Ippon.
This brought her to the contest for the third place with Laura Espadinha from France – a Bronze medallist in the Cadet European Cup in 2016. After four minutes of contest time there was no score and the contest went to Golden Score. Both athletes received 2 Shido each and the contest was very close and went on for three minutes where Sofia threw the athlete from France for a Waza-Ari and took the third place.
BRONZE FOR SOFIA and another EXCELLENT result for her at another major European international tournament.
Accompanying Sofia to the championship was her mother Antonina Asvesta.
The Cyprus Judo Federation wishes to thank and congratulate Sofia on her excellent result and wishes her even more success in the future.
